Target Local Audiences Essay

In this essay i will be talking about national localisation and how it affects the way games that are produced. These are affected through culture, language and various customs of certain countries. An example of this is in America. Any scenes which may replicate the acts of 9/11 will be instantly removed from a game and then actions may be taken against the company who created it. This may then have severe repercussions for the company.
Production is the making of products in this case video games. The content within these games however are affected due to certain barriers which are created by countries to stop inappropriate content into their countries. An example of this is in China. In China they are not allowed any computer consoles in their country as they believe this will corrupt the children’s minds. However they still play the likes of World of Warcraft on there pc's and they contribute alot to the worlds overall online game time. Recently ideas have been released of a games console being produced in china but with the games already on the hard drive. This means that the contant on the console can be controlled.
Next their is localisation. Their are many forms of localisation. These include lingiustic and cultural. This form of localisation is the changes made to a game for language and cultural purposes. So they change a game by adding the right language for the country it's being sent to and they take out any innapropriate scenes that are banned in that country e.g a swastika's and Nazis are illegal in Germany so therefore Call of Duty: World at War was not distributed in Germany. The second form of localisation is legal ratings. The legalisation is the national bodies that decide the age ratings of games. Thses include PEGI (Europe), ESRB (Usa and Canada), OFLC (Australia) and CERO (Japan). The third is hardware and software. This talks about the change between PAL and NTSC, re-mapping of hotkeys, gameplay modifications. The fourth and final localisation is graphics and music. Music in a game may differ as the national trends may be taken into consideration when choosing a soundtrack for a video game. When talking about graphics they may use the same character or  the same one with a few different changes. This is because of the cultures and trends in different countries. They might not like certain parts of the character as it goes against what that country/ culture stands for.

When marketing a product you need to think about what the target audience is. For example call of duty have a target audience of 16 to 35 year olds so they need to market their product when their target audience will be able to see it so they may put it in the middle of a football match so that their audience can see it. They can also put it on social network sites as these are very popular with the target audience they want. Once they put it on their it will start to spread and gain alot of attention and start to trend. This is called viral marketing. Also releasing posters can also gain attention towards it. As it is a AAA blockbuster game already many people will know about it but drip feeding their audience with info will keep the attention of their game in the spotlight. The content however has to be suitable for where it will be shown as it doesn't want to go against any cultures or norms in that country as they would get into trouble.

In conclusion i believe the most important issue is production of products in banned countries. This is because china are one of these countries who have banned consoles and are one of the biggests markets in the world so income is being lost. Localisation is less important as things can be bought over the internet in a flash ans you can lie about things (e.g age, country, etc.) to get the product you want so the age ratings and banned content can be easily contained without being caught.

Games Distribution

Task 1
1. The distributor for GTA V is Take Two Interactive. Take two interactive owns companies like 2k games and Rockstar games. They are based in new york city. They have distributed games like GTA and manhunt.
2. The distributors for Skylanders Giants are XPEC Entertainment. These are a company that are based in taiwan. They have distributed games like shrek and kung fu panda.
3. The distributors for Angry Birds is Chillingo. These are renowned for ripping rovio off when distributing angry birds so rovio let them go.

Task 2
This website is a catalogue of games from publishers. These sell games on from the publishers through there website. These publishers that are on this website aren't the household publishers that you hear. Nintendo and Bethesda are their which are two big ones but the rest are unheard off. Publishers use this distributor so they can sell the games and make there publisher more renowned in the game world. Also being alongside publishers like Bethesda and Nintendo will help get them recognised.

Task 3
The UK Retail Market: Today and the Future

User generated content

User generated content is content that is produced by the audience themselves who consume video games. An example of a User generated game is Little Big Planet. User generated content has a massive affect on what happens in the game market. This allows for new ideas to be produced and then these ideas can be used in other games.

In the article it explains that they don't think that rockstar would be able to release a game every year like call of duty and assassin's creed. This is because they believe in bringing out a new game every year it won't make as much money as the predecessor thinking that one day it will hit the wall but rockstar don't want that they want it to keep going and keep growing.

Pegi Ratings

Pegi (Pan European Game Information) is a rating system that advises customers to what age rating is suitable for content in a video game. These are the game ratings that are available.
File:PEGI 3.svg

3: Suitable for ages 3 and older. May contain mild violence in an appropriate context for younger children, but no bad language is allowed.File:PEGI 7.svg

7: Suitable for ages 7 and older. May contain mild, cartoon violence, sports, or elements that can be frightening to younger children.

File:PEGI 12.svg

12: Suitable for ages 12 and older. May contain violence in a fantasy setting, coarse language, mild sexual references or innuendo, or gambling.

File:PEGI 16.svg

16: Suitable for ages 16 and older. May contain explicit violence, strong language, sexual references or content, gambling, or drug use (encouragement).

File:PEGI 18.svg

18: Suitable for ages 18 and older. May contain graphic violence, including "violence towards defenseless people" and "multiple, motiveless killing", strong language, strong sexual content, gambling, drug use (glamorisation), or discrimination.

It wasd indroduced so that sellers can identify what audience can buy the game. If someone has come to buy a game they must prove there age to the seller so they can buy it. Previously it was rated through BBFC but they have stopped doing it now and all games are rated by Pegi.

When a game comes out the publishers have to submit the game for classification to Pegi. The retailers can only sell it to the corresponsding age on the box or higher. The developers knew the age of the game before they created it so they knew what content was allowed in the game.

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft
The world of warcraft is part of the online role playing game genre. It was released in November 2004. The game is free for a short amount of time (up to level 20) and then you need to pay for a subscription for a certain amount of months. Whatever you do in the trial will get carried over through to the full version if you decide to purchase it. The difference between World of Warcraft and a console based game is that World of Warcraft will go on and on and on whereas a console based game has and ending where everything can be complete. The game is made by Blizzard Entertainment. The game is available all over the world and the average amount of people online on World of Warcraft is 10 million. At the moment they are trying to push a new add on for the game Mists of Pandaria.

This is the World of Warcraft front cover.

When games are created a fan website maybe made. One has been made for World of Warcraft. On these websites they might discuss tactics and other problems with many other people who are part of the World of Warcraft community. These can be commented on on the World of Warcraft homepage and under community you can comment, question and provide answers for other members. When players are online on this community they use their own character names. There are many things on the message board allowing people to comment on so their are no specific amounts of comments on their. On this message board it does have links to social networking sites allowing them to spread to word about World of Warcraft. This is known as viral marketing.

GTA V trailer

GTA V Trailer
The new GTA V trailer has been released and there are several features on the presentation that have been used and released. The main narrative of the story that has been released is that there are three protagonists in the story. The first protagonist is an old white gentlemen in his 50's who has a nice apartment and a nice car but his family life isn't as relaxed. His son is also shown as a troublemaker as he is hanging from a yought on a dual carrigeway as it goes along the road. The second protagonist is another elderly white gentlemen who is slightly older than the previous who is totally diffrent to the other gentlemen. In the trailer it shows him in a dump and him with dead bodies, blowing up a house and stamping someones head in. This shows that he is a mad character. The final protgonist is a young black gentlemen who also has a nice apartment and cars but has a wife that doesn't want him to go back to crime. In the trailer it shows him in a vehicle shooting at someone who we can't see. All these protagonists know eachother through the first protagonist as show in the trailer introducing the other two to eachother.

The sound in the trailer is mainly diagetic sound with the actions happening in the trailer and the speach being used as the sound. Also a song is played throughout. This song is stevie wonders's song Skeletons. When the actions and speach are on in the trailer the song fades so the speach and sounds can be heard.

Throughout the trailer there are several establishing shots. These establishing shots are used to show the audience the city and to show off the graphological capabilities of the game itself. Fog is used in shots to hide some other parts of the game to keep them secret for when the game comes out or if they haven't completly finished that part of the game. There are also alot of medium shots in the game to show more of the graphics for example the pavement in the first protagonists apartment outside.

GTA V: the story so far

GTA V is the new grand theft auto game in the series. This an upcoming open world game that has been developed by rockstar north and published by rockstar games. It has been written by Dan Houser. It is due to come out around about spring 2013. This release date has changed several times but has been settled on as this. Rockstar have delayed it to make the game perfect when it is released. It is the follow up of the 2008 game GTA IV.

GTA have made fifteen games in total but in the main plot there have been four before this one. The first game GTA was made in 1997 and was created at the time by DMA design who have now become rockstar north and published by bmg interactive. The game in a nutshell was that you could go aroung a city and do what ever you wanted. It was available on playstation, windows and game boy colour. This was new ip at the time so it was a risk. It turned out to be a success and a second game was made GTA 2. GTA 2 was once again done by DMA design. This was made in 1999. This game was once again good and a third was made. It was platformed on palystation, windows and gameboy colour.  GTA III was made in 2001 and was also following the open world style of the other games. This franchise now was becoming well known and became a AAA blockbuster title. It was once again developed by DMA design but was the last to be devloped by them. This GTA however was published by Rockstar games. This is the company made by the Houser's. It was available on the playstation 2, platstation 3, windows, xbox, and an ios app for mobiles. GTA IV was released seven years after GTA III and is one of the most highest selling games of all time and has recieved many accolades.

There have been may spin off GTA titles like San Andreas, Liberty City, The Lost and Damned and Chinatown Wars. San Andreas was the biggest game as it broke many records and made GTA what it is today. This GTA is the GTA that most people like. San Andreas was made in 2004 for Playstation. Liberty City was made in 2005 for the playstation aswell. This is another add on to the story but wasn't as successful as San Andreas but it still made alot of money. These two games where made to fill in the otrher parts of the GTA story that the main ones didn't cover. The Lost and Damned is Dlc taht can be purchased as an add on to the GTA IV story. This is also the case for the Ballad of Gay Tony Dlc. Chinatown Wars is a totally GTA from the others. Where as all of the GTA's have been only playable for xbox and playstation users Chinatown Wars is only playable if you have a nintendo ds or 3ds. It is a GTA game but set in china.

GTA V is a third person person shooter that is going to be set in Los Santos. According to a statement made by rockstsr they believe this GTA will be the biggest GTA yet in terms of the open world. This news means that the game is highly anticipated and with new trailers and screenshots coming out every so often this keeps the audience interested in GTA for a long time even before it's come out.

Rockstar have released several screenshots and a trailer to this day but are going to release a new trailer on 14th november. This will give the audience new news about who are the main characters what weapons do you have and what is the main plot of the story. Recent screenshots though have shown people on speedboats, planes, cars, etc. The trailer gave us little clips of what is in the game but the cuts in frames meant that clips weren't on the screen long as it went on to another thing.

Top 20 games chart

This chart is showing the games that have sold the most copies over the last week worldwide. This shows the trends of what people like the most at this moment in time. This allows game developers to design new games that will fit in with the trend so their games will get bought. You can also see that activision, ea and ubisoft are the main game developers in the top 20. This shows that the more household known developers are having their games bought because they are trusted by the gaming market to make a new game that is good. This is because they are a trusted franchise. An example of a trusted franchise in the top 20 is assassin's creed 3. There is one first party game in the top 20. Forza horizon is made by microsoft and this means that it is only available on the xbox 360. This is known as a first party game. other examples of first party games are pokemon black and white and proffesor layton and the miracle mask. Their are a few kids games in the top 20. These include moshi monsters and skylanders. These are both made by activision. This shows that activison are trying to push games in to a younger market to get money. One casual game is in the top 20. This is Just dance 4. This is in the top 20 as this is a franchise that has grown and people enjoy playing this so people buy it. A couple of football games are in the chart. Football amnager 2013 and fifa 13 are there as they are well known franchises are bought year in year out. The new ip in the chart is dishonored. This game is brand new and nobody knows anything about it so making this was a massive risk. This may be bought because the the developers bethesda m,ade syrim and this was a good game. The audience may look on this and buy dishonored based on this. Within the next week call of duty black ops 2 will enter and probably at the top. This is because this is a AAA blockbuster game and everyone buys it. This is because it is a trusted franchise and this has been earnt because some of the previous games they have made have been good and the audience continue to buy them year in year out.

mountain dew- halo 4

This is an example of symbiosis. Halo 4 and mountain dew have come together to do this.

Zynga

Business Model
Zynga is supported in two manners: direct credit card payments and partner businesses. Several Zynga games require an "Energy" characteristic to play. Playing missions a core feature of many games, consumes a certain amount of energy. After expending energy, it slowly replenishes to the character's maximum limit. This can take minutes or several hours (energy replenishes whether or not players are logged into the game). After energy is replenished, players can engage in additional missions. Waiting for energy to replenish is a significant limiting factor in the games. Their support mechanisms take advantage of this. Zynga games are linked to offers from a number of partners. Players can accept credit card offers, take surveys or buy services from Zynga's partners in order to obtain game credits, which would allow them to replenish their character's energy or receive premium currency that could be exchanged for other various virtual goods.

Farmville 2
Farmville 2 was released earlier this month. They started advertising the game at zyngas press event at there headquarters where it was developed. It was also advertised through other zynga games like the first farmville game. This is done so people can viral market the game on that social networking website.

Zynga
Electronic Arts has asked a federal judge to dismiss claims filed by Zynga, which say that the copyright infringement lawsuit leveled against it by EA actually violated an agreement made by the two companies last year. Electronic Arts, the creators of The Sims Social, sued Zynga in August, alleging that Zynga violated copyright infringement with its new game, called The Ville. It also claimed that EA senior executives who left to work at Zynga had revealed details about the strategy and development of The Sims Social. In response, Zynga counter sued, seeking to stop EA from threatening to sue them, or from interfering with its hiring. Zynga claimed that EA had breached the terms of an agreement the two companies had signed in September 2011, which stated that EA stated that it would release claims it had made related to Zynga recruiting former and current EA employees. In exchange, Zynga would agree to no longer solicit EA employees. In its counter suit, Zynga also accused EA CEO John Riccitiello of getting Zynga to sign the agreement as part of an anticompetitive and unlawful scheme. EA says that the agreement only had to do with claims through the period when the it was first signed, giving it the right to level this current lawsuit at Zynga.

Skylanders Giants

Skylanders Giants

Skylanders: Giants is an upcoming 2012 video game in the Skylanders series, and it is going to be the direct sequel to the 2011 game Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. This game will be availabel for Xbox 360, PC, Playstation 3, Wii and Wii U. It will be one of the first games out on the Wii U.
Skylanders: Giants utilizes the first game's engine by building upon the fundamentals of the first game: merging a line of cross-platform toy figures with the video game world itself. The game will introduce over 40 new collectible figures, some of which are more than twice the size of the original Skylanders cast in both physical and virtual form. Their in-game powers and abilities reflect their colossal scale. It will also include a set of interactive characters that feature new light technology integrated into the toys. This allows the interactive figures' base to light up on contact with the "Portal of Power". Players will also be able to import characters and their progress from the first game, since they are backwards compatible with this title.
The game will feature new arenas and more gameplay options in Battle Mode for head-to-head play, as well as enhanced Elemental Zones, new Hero Challenges, and other features that encourage players to collect and level up every character.

  • We all need to paly 10,000 hours of gameplay before we are 21.
  • At the moment there are 500 million gamers
  • So far we have spent 5.93 million years gametime on World of Warcraft.

Synergy and Symbiosis

Synergy is two or more things coming together to make an outcome that is better than an oringinal idea that they had separately. An example of synergy in the video game world is when games are made of films that are coming out and they do this if the game is building up to be a big seller so they make it so people buy the game. A good example was avatar as it was made into a film as the film was a big hit.

Symboisis is when different companies work together to make a product. These companies aren't related whatsoever and example of this is when angry birds and mcdonalds worked together and made happy meal toys of angry birds. They did this so angry birds got out there and mcdonalds did it to get the audience what they want.

Indie games

Indie games are games that are created by individuals to go on a marketplace of a video game console or the app store. These games like i said are created by one, two maybe three people. This means they are not like the big companies like rockstar who employ over 100 people to create their video game. This means that game could take from anywhere from a year to six years depending on how many people you have, what skills they have and how complexed the idea is. Examples of an indie game is minecraft. This is now one of the biggest selling video games of all time and this is an indie game so it was only created by a handful of people.

Braid
Braid is a puzzle game created by Jonathan Blow. The game was released on August 6, 2008 for the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade service. A Microsoft Windows version was released on April 10, 2009. Hothead Games ported and released the game to Mac OS X on May 20, 2009 and the PlayStation Network on November 12, 2009.

The basic story elements unfold as the protagonist, Tim, attempts to rescue a princess from a monster. Text passages laid throughout the game reveal a multifaceted narrative, giving clues about Tim's contemplations and motivations. The game features traditional aspects of the platform genre while integrating various powers of time-manipulation. Using these abilities, the player progresses by finding and assembling jigsaw puzzle pieces.

Blow designed the game as a personal critique of contemporary trends in game development. He funded the three-year project with his own money. Artist David Hellman drew the artwork, which underwent several iterations until it satisfied Blow's vision. A preliminary version of Braid without the final artwork won the "Innovation in Game Design" award at the 2006 Independent Games Festival; the final version received additional accolades. The game received highly positive reviews from critics, eventually becoming the highest critically rated title on Xbox Live. Some reviewers, however, criticized the game's price relative to its length.

Template business model and Indie games

The tentpole business is the the big blockbuster games that are released by the big copmpanies because they know people will buy it whatever its like when it comes out. These tentpole games normally bring in the massive money so the business can spend it on making new and risky games. Grand Theft Auto, Fifa, Call of Duty, etc are examples of games that are hollywood blockbusters and that will bring in the money. Hollywood model is where parts of the game are contracted out to other people to create the perfect model they want. Big companies like rockstar games, ubisoft, etc send parts of the game out to differnt people to make it the best it cxan be but this comes with a cost as it is very exspensive to do this. Indie games (Independent games) are games made by people like us who want to make a game. This is also expensive for the people to create and put this game on marketplaces as it costs money to make the game and for the software to be downloaded for a certain console.

Gaming History

My name is Oliver and i own and Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii. My favourite games are the Call of Duty series, Fifa series, and the International cricket series. I have many other games which incloude fable 2, fable 3, dj hero, operation flashpoint, f1, etc. I have xbox live and and i go on my xbox for 30 minutes to 1 hour a day. I go on my wii with the family when there is a chance too. We normally go on the likes of Wii sports, Wii play, etc.

Hot Coffee- GTA: San Andreas

The hot coffee mod is a mini game in the game grand theft auto: san andreas. This mini game was hidden in the game so nobody would know about it but modders found this level and unlocked it. This level portrays sexual intercourse between the main character Carl Johnson and his girlfriend. This made massive controversy with politicians and lawmakers getting involved. This meant that the game was re rated as an adult game and it was taken of the shelves. This game has since been released again onto the shelves with the mini game deleted from the content. Despite this, a more advanced hack still gives access to this minigame, even on the updated version.
This impacted all of the stakeholders with the publishers and developers losing money as the game was removed of the shelves for a long period of time. The platform holders also lost money with added content not being accessible as the game was taken of the shelves the platform holders lost money and gamers. The consumer also weren't happy with the removal of the game so they may have lost interest in this game and may have lost interest in the console all together.

The controller revolution essay

The controller revolution: Gesture controllers-

How have they affected the videogames industry?

The controller revolution is changing rapidly as the technology is changing. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are changing their controllers and trying to find ways to improve them so they can compete with each other. As the game industry prepare themselves to go into the eighth generation of games consoles they are trying to find new ways to excite there audience. The recent introduction of the Kinect for the Xbox 360 and Move for the PlayStation 3 has made the competition with the Wii even tougher and now with new games being compatible with these controllers the videogame industry is becoming even more competitive. In this essay I will explore how these controllers have changed the videogames industry.

Kinect

Kinect is a motion sensing input device by Microsoft for the Xbox 360. Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands. The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360's audience beyond its typical gamer base. This is Microsoft’s version of the motion sensor to compete with PlayStation and Wii. This device has introduced the games that have revolutionized the videogames industry with them being the something new. Kinect sports, kinect adventures, etc. allow the player to do the natural movements instead of using controllers in hands. This is why it holds the Guinness World Record of being the "fastest selling consumer electronics device".

Move

This is PlayStations attempt at the motion sensing industry with PlayStation Move. Based around a handheld motion controller wand, PlayStation Move uses the PlayStation Eye camera to track the wand's position, and inertial sensors in the wand to detect its motion. Hardware available at launch included the main PlayStation Move motion controller, a supplementary PlayStation Move navigation controller, and an optional PlayStation Move charging station. Although PlayStation Move is implemented on the existing PlayStation 3 console, Sony stated that it treated Move's debut as its own major "platform launch", with a marketing campaign to support it. The PlayStation Move has enhanced game interaction and made it more realistic to play the games. These games in clude virtua tennis, killzone, etc.

Wii Motion Plus

The Wii motion plus is an add on to the wii controller which allows the user to have a more accurate motion copied by the console. During Nintendo's presentation of Wii's successor console, the Wii U, it was announced that it will have support for the Wii Remote Plus and its peripherals in games where use of its touchscreen-built-in primary controller is not imperative. Games for the wii are normally produced by themselves as a first party developer and these include wii sports resort, Just Dance 2 and others. These games changed the ideas of gaming and Sony and Microsoft have followed suit by bringing out there own versions.

Overall the video games that are getting produced today are ones that are compatible with the motion sensor part of the gaming world. This means the videogames industry has moved on with games development by producing this and this is what the future of gaming looks like. Motion Sensors have changed the way we see and the way we play video games.

Wii U

Wii U
Wii U console and controller.jpg
The Wii U  is part of the next generation of gaming consoles as they have jumped ahead of the competition by releasing it first. It is part of the eighth generation of consoles. It wioll be released on the 30th november 2012 in europe. Nintendo stated that the Wii U supports 1080p graphics and has 2 GB of memory; 1 GB as system memory and the same for game memory. This is more than 20 times the memory of the Wii. The console will be released in two versions; a basic white version with 8 GB of internal storage, and a premium black version with 32 GB of internal storage, which includes stand and docks. The Wii U features a new controller, called the Wii U GamePad, with an embedded touchscreen. The controller allows a player to continue playing games by displaying the game even when the television is off. A second controller has now been released its called the pro controller. This is more like the traditional game pad.

The system will be backward compatible with Wii, and Wii U games can support compatibility with Wii peripherals, such as the Wii Remote Plus and the Nunchuk. Games will become available for purchase and downloaded from Nintendo's Virtual Console service.

The price of the Wii U will be around about £249 to buy.

Some of the launch titles that will bge released with the Wii U are:
  • ZombiU
  • Nintendoland
They are also trying to bring Assassins Creed 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Darksiders 2 and Mass Effect 3 to the Wii U aswell to add to the other titles.
